So often we answer that question based on the identities we’ve created through the things that we do.
I guess that’s a good enough way to start. Because the activities that fill our lives, including the choice of careers we pursue, says a lot about how we see ourselves and what we want from our lives.
But when we strip away the activities — like when a job dries up and life forces us to go in a new direction — what’s left?
Who are we really? What are we capable of? What is the purpose of our lives? And how can we make better use of our limited time here in these bodies?
I’m not going to tell you some grand story based upon some spiritual or religious teaching.
Rather, I’m simply going to suggest that your life offers you the chance to ask the questions that matter most to you, and then set out on a quest to discover the answers for yourself.
This is your life. You give it meaning. You give it direction. You give it relationship to everything else around you.
The best part of it is, it’s all up to you. Maybe you don’t consciously choose everything that happens in your life. But if you think of it, you sure do decide how you’re going to respond to and deal with it, not to mention what you’ll set your sights on to have or become in the future.
So as you’re thinking about who you are, why not consider some other questions that might help shape that effort.
Who do you want to be? What do you want from your life? What kind of relationships do you want — with God, with family, with country, and with the billions of others scattered around the world?
When you know these answers, you will have charted out a pretty good course for the rest of your time here on earth.
And that’s a very good thing indeed.
